Counterfeit electrical products are infecting nearly every product category in the electrical market. Manufacturers, distributors, contractors and customers face risks, ranging from liability and life safety to profitability. The problems must be addressed, and it will take the unity of the entire electrical industry to do so.

The Electrical Distributor (tED) and ELECTRICAL CONTRACTOR magazines have joined forces again to produce an all-industry, anti-counterfeiting advocacy initiative.

These two partners in the electrical construction industry share a history in fighting counterfeit electrical products. In their respective December 2008 issues, they produced a joint Anti-Counterfeit supplement, and in 2009 they co-produced a Webinar, conference seminars, and ongoing Web initiatives at CounterfeitsCanKill.com.

Like the first initiative, this campaign is endorsed by leading electrical industry associations and standards organizations including Canadian Standards Association (CSA); National Association of Electrical Distributors (NAED); National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA); National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA); and Underwriters Laboratory (UL).

The major components of the 2010-2011 initiative are follow:

  • An on-going ad campaign in both magazines that reminds everyone of the dangers and liabilities of counterfeit electrical products
  • Monthly updates with news, interviews and vital counterfeit prevention information posted to CounterfeitsCanKill.com
  • Links to CounterfeitsCanKill.com through publication, association, and sponsor Web sites and online publications.

The goal of the campaign is to build on current industry collaboration that thwarts the growth of counterfeit electrical products in the marketplace. Manufacturers have come together to sponsor this initiative with the objective of eliminating the sale and installation of counterfeit electrical products. Campaign sponsors are Alcan, Eaton, Fluke, GE, Siemens, and Square D by Schneider Electric.
